Waterfalls on the walk to Franz Josef Glacier, West Coast, NZ South Island.

Getting there –

  • From Christchurch – 5.5hrs, state Highway 73 & SH6
  • From Queenstown – 4.45 hr, state Highway 6

We opted for the cheaper option when visiting Franz Josef Glacier; walking the trail, rather than forking out for the helicopter ride (next time!) and we were not disappointed.

These waterfalls lead the way to the Glacier, running all year round, deafening the closer you got, just as beautiful up close as from a distance.

Signs say the track is a 2 hr round trip – we did it in just over an hour. There are guided tours available, and we saw people from toddlers to the elderly along the way, so don’t worry about steep climbs, there’s none.
